PLANS for 576 new homes near Cosmeston Country Park have been revealed.

The plans on the Welsh Government-owned land stretching from Lavernock Road to the coast include a new primary school, community facilities and public open space.

The Welsh Government is promising that 40% of the houses will be affordable, and there would be a major new pedestrian and cycle link from the coastal path to Cosmeston Lakes.

Up to two car-parking spaces would be allocated to each home, and the primary school would be two-form entry.

There would also be around twoand-a-half acres of public open space, including children’s play areas and outdoor sports space, and an extension of the National Cycle Network Route 88 through a disused railway line into Penarth town centre.

The public are being asked for their views on the plans ahead of a formal application being submitted to Vale of Glamorgan Council. The homes would be built near Cosmeston Lakes

A statement prepared for the Welsh Government said the plans “will help to create a sustainable community promoting active travel”.

“Walking and cycling will be promoted as a primary mode of transport for the residents of the new development, providing the necessary pedestrian and cycling infrastructure within the site to encourage residents to walk and cycle along a network of interconnecting public open spaces,” the statement said.

The plans would add to 540 new homes approved in Cog Road in Sully – which would mean more than 1,100 new homes are being planned within just a mile of each other.

Concerns have previously been raised about the level of traffic the new homes would create.

Access to the new homes would be via two new junctions on Lavernock Road.

The estate would be split into four areas named Llyr Calchfaen, Hedgerow Holm, Gardd Der Y Mor and Marconi’s Heights.

Main streets would have segregated cycle paths and electric vehicle charging stations.

A consultation is being held on Asbri Planning’s website until October 14.
