Storm set to bring up to 10cm of rain

A POWERFUL storm set to move across Wales this weekend could unleash up to 100mm of rain, resulting in widespread flooding. Following a yellow weather warning for rain on Tuesday, the Met Office warned a second round of severe weather could break out by the weekend.

The group’s latest forecast calls for a spell of “persistent rain overnight on Saturday with frequent heavy showers on Sunday” as a storm system moves across the British Isles.

The downpours, which could lead to flooding and travel disruption across the country, will be enhanced by Tropical Storm Jerry in the North Atlantic.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys said: “The rain will be enhanced by moisture from Tropical Storm Jerry even though Jerry will remain out in the central North Atlantic.

“This could bring the threat for flooding. Confidence is still low at this point on where the heaviest rain will set up.”

A widespread one to two inches (2550mm) could fall across across Wales.

But in some localised areas, it’s possible the storm’s total rainfall could exceed 100mm.

Where the heaviest rain sets up, scattered flooding is likely, Roys said, especially from small streams and poor drainage areas.

Residents should be prepared for strong winds, particularly in coastal areas, and the possibility of downed trees and power cuts.

Gusts could top 50mph in some locations.

Those who have to venture out should leave extra time for travel, with road closures and transportation delays likely.

The stormy weather will begin to subside by Sunday afternoon, giving way to calmer conditions.
