Hundreds march for Europe

HUNDREDS of people joined a proEurope march through Cardiff city centre on Saturday.

The rally was originally organised to protest against the suspension of Parliament and was timed to coincide with the Conservative Party’s conference in Manchester this weekend.

Boris Johnson’s decision to suspend Parliament last month was ruled as unlawful by the Supreme Court and MPs returned to the House of Commons on Wednesday.

The march was also against a nodeal Brexit.

Wales for Europe chairman Geraint Talfan Davies said: “This will be a moment for the whole country to bear witness that we are a European nation in fact and spirit.”

The march began outside Cardiff Crown Court and ended in The Hayes. Many protesters wore blue and yellow and were waving EU and Welsh flags.

Manon Morgan, from Whitchurch, Cardiff, joined the march with her son Aeron. She said: “We’re here to try and protect his future.”

Graham Roberts, from Rhiwbina, Cardiff, said: “I think it’s important people show their opposition to what’s going on. I think it’s important that my grandkids have a future and I think their future is in the EU.”

Sue Maw said: “I’m here because I’ll probably lose my job if we leave the EU. I work in the university and we’ve already had redundancies. I’ve already noticed food getting more expensive and I’m really worried a no-deal Brexit is being talked about as if it’s a good idea. That’s a nightmare scenario.”

Cardiff South and Penarth MP Stephen Doughty spoke at the rally. He said: “This week has been shocking. This is about protecting our future.

“They want to distract us from the fact that Boris Johnson broke the law, lied to the Queen and tried to break the heart of democracy.”

Cardiff North MP Anna McMorrin said: “I’m marching for an open, inclusive society. Not one of division and damaging populism.”

Plaid Cymru MEP Jill Evans told the crowd: “The Government has failed Wales.”
