■■For people planning a sober October, there’s a free event to kick-start their efforts. Mocktails, Snacks and Music takes place at the Virgin Money Lounge, Cardiff, tomorrow, Tuesday October 1, from 6.30pm to 8pm. Just call in, shake up a delicious alcohol-free cocktail and enjoy live music – no need to book. Entry is free with a suggested donation of £5 to Guide Dogs.

■■The next meeting of the Cardiff Diabetes UK Cymru Group is on Wednesday, October 2, at 7.30pm in the Bethel Whitchurch Community Hall, off Penlline Road, Whitchurch, Cardiff, CF14 2AA. This month’s guest speaker is Claire Bottomley from Sherman 5, who will talk about their efforts to involve people who are not usually able to use the theatre’s facilities. Chances to ask questions and talk to members about any concerns or tips about diabetes. Everyone is welcome, diabetic or not. Light refreshments available. ■■ Wesley Methodist Church in Canton (corner of Nottingham Street and Cowbridge Road East) is holding a coffee morning with homemade cakes from 10am until noon, on Saturday, October 5. Also a jumble sale. All proceeds to Marie Curie.

■■VSO Cardiff is holding a fundraising curry evening, followed by a quiz, on Saturday, October 12, at 7pm at the Pontcanna Scout Hall, Fields Park Road, off Cathedral Road. Entry costs £9. To reserve a place email sarah@ nossvoss.co.uk. The curries are vegetarian and many are vegan. This is a fundraiser for VSO International and for local project Space4U, a drop-in day centre run by volunteers. Each week three volunteers cook and serve a meal for about 150 asylum seekers. The funds raised will buy the ingredients for these meals and also buy reconditioned bicycles, bike locks, lights and high-viz tabards so asylum seekers can get to English classes, Home Office appointments, etc.
