Victory gives Dragons a platform, insists Flynn

BRIAN Flynn says Saturday’s win over Ebbsfleet United is “something to build on” as managerless Wrexham ended a run of eight matches without a victory to move out of the National League relegation places.

Legendary Dragons boss Flynn was back in charge at the Racecourse for a second spell, taking over on an interim basis following the midweek sacking of Bryan Hughes.

A stunning strike from Paul Rutherford on 74 minutes handed the Dragons a 1-0 win over their fellow strugglers and Flynn was pleased with the manner of his side’s performance.

“I think what you have got to have is for the team to be effective in all departments and that was really the key theme to the game plan, to be effective in all three departments,” said Flynn.

“And the way you do that is really by running, dynamic running especially, and I thought we did that for 90 minutes.

“It wasn’t pretty but it was pretty effective. We had a good game plan in terms of what I asked the players to do. When it is not pretty then you have to be effective and I think we were.

“Defensively I thought we were magnificent. We could be a bit more creative in midfield, there were a few misplaced passes which can happen, but overall there was too many positives to look at any negatives really.”

Flynn opted to keep the 3-4-3 formation used at AFC Fylde in midweek, a 3-2 loss at Mill Farm proving to be Hughes’s final game in charge and a game in which goalkeeper Christian Dibble made two poor errors which led to goals.

And the caretaker manager also praised the impact of halftime substitute Rutherford, who fired home the winner from the edge of the box following good build-up play between Jason Oswell, Bobby Grant and JJ Hooper.

Flynn added: “I am being sarcastic calling it a boring 1-0 win. It was pleasing to keep a clean sheet, get a win and get three points.”
