Bedwas grab late victory

-

THERE were dramatic scenes at The Gnoll where Bedwas snatched a late 16-14 win over Neath in the Specsavers National Championship.

Stefan Sankala’s side looked to be on their way to a first defeat until Jordan Rees’ try at the death, with James Hallett holding his nerve to bang over a touchline conversion.

Second half tries from Jon Hill and Luke Griffiths, both converted by the latter, had edged Neath ahead having trailed 9-0 at the break thanks to three penalties from Dion McIntosh.

The win made it four from four for Wass, who are two points back on leaders Pontypool.

The champions march on as they inflicted a 50-8 defeat on Narberth at the Lewis-Lloyd Ground.

It was an enjoyable afternoon in Pembrokeshire for Pooler, who ran in eight tries.

Narberth actually led early on through Nick Gale’s try but a brace from Ieuan Jones and one for Owain Leonard saw Pooler hit back.

They led 21-8 lead at the break with Kieran Meek adding the extras while Gale also kicked a penalty for the Otters.

Second half tries followed from Leonard, Meek, Aaron Coundley and the aptly named Lloyd Lewis, who touched down twice.

Meek and Richard Powell each kicked another conversion.

Bargoed were thumping 45-7 home winners over Tata Steel and are still unbeaten, as are the students of Cardiff Met who edged out Ystalyfera 20-17 at the Ynysydarren Ground.

Met’s tries came courtesy of Corey Lewis, Andrew Nurse and Jack Silvester with Russell Bennett booting five points.

Ben Jones, Steffan Jones and Jon Bayliss went over for the Fera, with Steff Castle adding a conversion, to earn a losing bonus point.

Elsewhere Beddau came from 12-6 down at half time to run out eventual 17-12 winners over Maesteg Quins.

Ben Lee, Luke Studley and Morgan Burgess all dotted down in the second half with Hywel Chatham converting all three to add to his two first half penalties.

A penalty try and Geraint Evans were the Quins’ scorers.

Trebanos got the better of Ystrad Rhondda 24-16 thanks to tries from Tom Dew (2), and George Spalding. Richard Brunton kicked three conversions and a penalty.

Jay Harris got Ystrad’s try with Rhys Truelove booting the rest.

And tries from Josh Male and Jack Beetham helped steer Glamorgan Wanderers to a 20-14 triumph at Cross Keys. Paul Short added 10 points from the kicking tee.

Loui O’Brien scored for Keys in addition to three penalties from Kieran Hill.
