Power-packed Quins claim the bragging rights in derby

-

CARMARTHEN Quins took the West Wales bragging rights as they claimed a 28-18 home victory over a struggling Llanelli side.

In the end the hosts had too much power, with a penalty try plus scores from Torin Myhill and Leon Randall along with 11 points from the boot of Jack Wilson enough to secure the win.

Llanelli scored two tries of their own courtesy of Aaron Grabham and Ioan Hughes, with Hughes also kicking eight points.

“We are really happy with that win,” said Carmarthen Quins head coach Emyr Phillips.

“We haven’t put in an 80-minute performance yet this season and that’s something we have to work on, but this was a step in the right direction.”

Llanelli started strongly, with left wing Grabham showing terrific pace down the touchline for the opening try of the game after some nice handling from his inside backs.

But Quins’ pack began to claw their way back into the game, with hooker Torin Myhill powering his way over from close range after a period of sustained pressure by Phillips’s side. Carmarthen Quins tight-head prop Ben Leung was then sent to the sin-bin for a high tackle, with Ioan Hughes extending Llanelli’s lead with a successful shot at goal.

Once the hosts were back to their full complement they began to dominate physically and were awarded a penalty try due to their dominance at scrum time.

Jack Wilson extended Carmarthen’s lead with a penalty to give the hosts a 15-11 lead at the interval.

The hosts took control in the opening stages of the second half, with dangerous full-back Leon Randall hitting an excellent line for their third try with some nice handling from Nick Reynolds and Scott Lloyd which was converted by Wilson. But Llanelli stayed within touching distance, with outside-half Hughes on the end of a terrific team try that he converted.

Despite Llanelli pushing hard with a period of pressure towards the end, the Quins defence held firm to record a notable win.

CARMARTHEN QUINS: Tries: T Myhill, pen try, L Randall. Con: J Wilson. Pens: J Wilson (3). LLANELLI: Tries: A Grabham, I Hughes. Cons: I Hughes. Pens: I Hughes (2).
