A SCHOOLBOY from South Wales has revealed how his favourite hobby is to dress up in drag – and dreams of becoming a famous drag queen when he’s older.

Nine-year-old Fabian stars in a new TV documentary showing boys from across the UK who love transforming themselves by wearing wigs, high heels and make-up.

The show called Kids in Drag: We’re Fabulous tells how Fabian started using his mum’s lipstick and mascara when he was just six years old.

He appears on the new two-part series alongside his mum, Rachel, who says she hopes that Fabian can set an example to other children to allow them to “be what you want to be”.

Fabian who said when he grows up he wants to be like his idols Ru Paul and Evie Oddly.

In the show he is seen shopping for glamorous wigs in Cardiff’s indoor market.

“I discovered my son’s interests from about age five,” said Rachel.

“I thought it was a phase but as he got older I could see it was his passion and the determination that came with it.

“We hope as parents for our son to be happy and content in whatever he does and loves doing.

“We hope the programme will reach out to other families or a child who is experiencing the same interests as Fabian and show that if you’ve got good support from your family you can be what you want to be and follow your dreams, and know that it’s OK.”

Rachel said it was important for children to able to live their lives without being judged, but she admitted that she closely checks social media to make sure that her son was not being picked on.

“As parents, you’re always worried about your child,” she added. “Whatever choice they take in life you just take each day as it comes and approach difficulty when it arises. Also, I monitor social media very, very closely to prevent any negativity. For any child to be able to express themselves is very important in this day and age, without worrying about judgement and to know that it’s OK to be different.

“We hope that this documentary will reach out and help others – especially dads and mums – to understand and accept their son’s or their daughter’s choices.”

Fabian is one of three boys to feature in the documentary, which focuses on how their parents tread the fine line of keeping their children’s appearance ageappropriate while applying make-up and trying different styles.

The subject of gender identity is also explored, as the show follows Fabian and his new friends venturing into the world of drag.
