Outbreak of mumps at universities

AN OUTBREAK of mumps has hit Cardiff and Cwm Taf with at least 28 cases being investigated.

Public Health Wales is urging people to make sure they have the MMR vaccination after students in Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University and the University of South Wales were diagnosed with mumps.

The vaccine, usually administered in childhood, protects against mumps, measles and rubella.

Public Health Wales said it was aware of 28 cases since October 16, but that it would continue to monitor the situation.

Mumps symptoms include swelling on the angle of the jaw on one or both sides of the face. Other symptoms include headaches, joint pain, feeling sick or tired, loss of appetite, high temperatures or a dry mouth.

The infection can be spread through coughs and sneezes, or through direct contact with the saliva of an infectious person such as through sharing drinks or kissing.

Dr Rhianwen Stiff, Consultant in Communicable Disease Control for Public Health Wales, said: “The MMR vaccine is extremely effective in protecting against measles and rubella, with 99% of those who have received two doses protected for many years.

“One dose of MMR protects around 65% of those who receive it against mumps, with a second dose of MMR improving immunity to around 85% of recipients. So it is possible to see mumps in individuals who have been vaccinated with MMR.

“It is important that people with suspected mumps keep away from university and social gatherings for five days after their symptoms start, wash their hands frequently and especially after blowing their nose and don’t share items such as water bottles or cigarettes with others.”

This is the second time this year students at Cardiff Metropolitan University have been susceptible to the virus, with the university warning of an outbreak in April.

A university spokesperson said: “A small number of cases of the mumps virus have been identified at Cardiff Met. We have provided information to all students and staff, highlighting symptoms to be aware of.

“We would encourage individuals identifying any of these symptoms to seek advice from their GP as early as possible. Any students diagnosed with mumps are advised to inform our students services team if the illness has an impact on their studies.

“We will continue to work closely with Public Health Wales to monitor the situation and to support those affected by the illness.”

A Cardiff University spokesperson said: “In consultation with Public Health Wales, we have advised our students to ensure their routine vaccinations are up to date and to remain observant for symptoms.”

A University of South Wales spokesperson said: “We’ve been made aware of a suspected outbreak of mumps.

“All students are being notified of advice from Public Health Wales highlighting the symptoms, and the steps they need to take if they suspect they may have the mumps virus.

“Anyone diagnosed with mumps is asked to contact USW Advice Zone staff, who will advise on the actions they need to take in relation to their studies.”
