Lallana to the rescue as leaders’ winning runs ends

-

LIVERPOOL dropped their first points of the Premier League season as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Manchester United.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for the hosts in the 36th minute, with Adam Lallana equalising five minutes from time.

Dele Alli salvaged a point for Tottenham as Mauricio Pochettino’s men survived late VAR controversy to snatch a 1-1 draw against bottom club Watford.

Alli’s 86th-minute equaliser was initially given as no goal on the big screen, only for it to transpire that the wrong message had been relayed and the goal had in fact been given.

Pochettino’s beleaguered side had looked to be heading for another shock defeat after Abdoulaye Doucoure’s sixth-minute opener.

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea made it five wins in a row but were tested to the limit in a 1-0 win over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.

But Marco Alonso finally broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute.

Under-pressure Everton boss Marco Silva was handed a respite as Everton cruised to a 2-0 win over West Ham at Goodison Park.

Bernard grabbed an early opener and Gylfi Sigurdsson scored the second in stoppage time.

Leicester came from behind to beat Burnley 2-1 in another match marred by issues over a VAR decision.

Clarets boss Sean Dyche looked furious when a late Jonny Evans own goal was ruled out due to a foul in the build-up.

Chris Wood’s 26th-minute header had put the visitors ahead against the run of play, but Jamie Vardy headed Leicester level on the stroke of half-time, and Youri Tielemans fired in the winner in the 74th minute.

Aston Villa also fought back from behind to beat 10-man Brighton at Villa Park. Adam Webster put Brighton in front in the 21st minute and despite having Aaron Mooy sent off for a second yellow just past the half-hour, the Seagulls held firm.

Jack Grealish levelled on the stroke of half-time, and Villa full-back Matt Targett grabbed the three points in stoppage time from a tight angle.

A second-half penalty from Raul Jimenez rescued a point for Wolves against Southampton at Molineux afterDanny Ings had puts Saints in front in the 53rd minute.

But when Matt Doherty was fouled in the box, Jimenez stepped up to grab a point for the hosts.

Bournemouth and Norwich fought out an eminently forgettable 0-0 draw.
