Fire crews called to tackle huge blaze in barn
SMOKE from a large barn fire spread across Cardiff yesterday.
Firefighters were called to a farm in the Peterstone area of Wentlooge, Cardiff, just after 10am.
Nine crews were sent to the scene and took water from a nearby stream to douse the flames.
Charlotte Prosser, whose parents own the farm, said her distraught father rang her yesterday morning.
She said: “My dad and his helper were working with the sheep this morning when they heard a big bang and then saw the fire. They called the fire service straightaway, and when I heard I zoomed straight over.
“There are about 1,500 bales of hay in the barn which is our livelihood, but thankfully there were no animals in there. It is still devastating. If it had been this time next week, it would have been filled with horses and sheep.
“We have managed to move the horses out of their field and away from the worst of the smoke. We have been told to stay well back as well as it has spread from one barn to the next. The fire is still going and the fire crews think it will go on for another 24 to 48 hours.”
People across the city reported a burning smell.
One office worker who had gone out on her lunch break said: “I work in the city centre near the railway station and I could smell burning as I was coming down in the lift. It got really strong when I went out of the building.
“The wind must be blowing the smell in the direction of the city.”
Another said: said: “I am in the city centre and there is a strong smell of smoke.
“Looking south and east from St Mary Street the sky seems to be either thick with smoke or fog, which is surprising considering how far away it is.”
People were being urged to keep their windows and doors closed.
