IMAGINE Band Aid crossed with Stars In Their Eyes, and throw in some Pudsey Bear for good measure. Because that basically sums up this entertaining documentary.
Yep, it’s that time of year again when we need to dig deep for the hugely worthy cause, Children In Need. But instead of a charity single this year, there’s a whole album! And in the run-up to the main fundraiser in a fortnight’s time, Children In Need: Got It
Covered is the programme which shows how the musical venture was put together.
Actor Shaun Dooley – who starred in Broadchurch and Gentleman Jack – masterminded the idea, which brings together the likes of David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker, Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Colman (ie. his mates) to sing on an album of cover hits.
All ten stars recorded songs – each personal to them – at the legendary London studios Abbey Road and RAK, and this 90 minute doc follows the whole process.
Highlights include Olivia Colman’s distinctive version of Glory Box by Portishead, and Jodie Whittaker’s take on the early Coldplay classic, Yellow.
As a huge fan of the London band, the current Doctor Who actor is blown away when lead guitarist Jonny Buckland and drummer Will Champion come in and surprise her – and they all sing together.
“I’ve always felt there’s a hidden pop star in all of us that’s desperate to get out,” says Shaun, 45, who admits he never even asked if his actor pals could sing. “It’s more about their personalities coming across.”
