A MAN sexually assaulted a student after having sex with her flatmate and then lying to get into her bedroom in the early hours.

John King knocked on the victim’s door and persuaded her to let him into her room by claiming he needed somewhere to stay until he could leave in the morning.

Sentencing him at Cardiff Crown Court, Judge David Wynn Morgan said: “On the night in question, you were behaving disgracefully.”

Roger Griffiths, prosecuting, said the incident happened in the early hours on October 24 last year in Cardiff.

King was invited back to the flat by the complainant’s flatmate and had consensual sex with her.

Later that night he walked down the corridor and knocked on the victim’s door, asking her to let him in.

The court heard he told her he needed somewhere to stay until he could go home in the morning and she agreed to let him in.

Judge Wynn Morgan said: “In the judgement of the court, this defendant lied to get into the room.

“Had the complainant known the true position, she would not have admitted him.”

The judge said the circumstances amounted to trespass.

King sexually assaulted the woman, who was studying in Cardiff, in her own bedroom.

She cannot be identified for legal reasons.

King, 20, from Coity Close in Trowbridge, Cardiff, denied sexual assault, assault by penetration and rape.

He was found guilty by a jury after trial of sexual assault and acquitted of the other two counts.

Ruth Smith, defending, said: “He is a young man of previous good character.”

The court heard his mother had died four years ago and he dropped out of college.

Ms Smith added: “The loss of his mother at a young age had a significant effect on him.

“It caused the family great upset and division.”

She told the court he is still determined to make something of himself through education and employment.

King was jailed for two years and will serve half of that in custody before he can be released.

He must register as a sex offender for 10 years and the judge made a five-year restraining order.
