We won’t take Bridgend lightly, insists coach Law

CARDIFF RFC head coach Steve Law insists his side top of the table side won’t be underestimating basement club Bridgend.

The Blue and Blacks are top of the Indigo Group Premiership with the Ravens propping up the table on a mere six points. On paper, Cardiff should ease past Bridgend at the Brewery Field tomorrow (2.30pm).

“Bridgend have been very unlucky and they lost to Pontypridd at the last play of the game,” said Law, whose side racked up a 78-12 Specsavers Cup win over Ebbw Vale last weekend, with Dan Fish scoring three tries.

“We definitely won’t be taking them lightly because if you look at their performances they haven’t been far away at all. If you’ve got aspirations to be the best, which we do, then you need consistency in terms of your results.

“We can’t afford to underestimate teams. It’s not good to turn up against the best sides then lose to someone who is at the wrong end of the table.

“Our full focus is on beating Bridgend because we know it’s against a quality side who will be desperate to get a win.”

The weekend’s Premiership action kicks-off tonight with Llandovery travelling to the Wern to face last season’s champions Merthyr (7.05pm). After a disappointing start to the season Merthyr have bounced back and are now up to third in the table.

On Saturday, Aberavon host west Wales strugglers Llanelli. Jason Hyatt’s side are second in the table, but have a game in hand on Cardiff who they face in a gigantic clash next weekend.

Like Law’s side, they can ill afford to slip up as they look to remain unbeaten this season. Tenth-placed Ebbw Vale will face a stern challenge against Carmarthen Quins this weekend.

Matt Silva’s RGC 1404 face Swansea at Parc Eirias. Swansea are currently in eighth place and need a win to lift themselves up the table.

The weekend’s action concludes on Sunday as Pontypridd travel east to face Newport at Rodney Parade (2.30pm). Pontypridd have had an underwhelming start to the season as they hover around mid-table. Newport will be desperately keen to move into the top three after a positive start to the Premiership season. ■ The draw for the quarter-finals of the Specsavers Cup is: Merthyr v Neath, Llanelli v Cardiff, Pontypool v Carmarthen Quins, Aberavon v Llandovery.

Games are to be played on the weekend of January 25, 2020.
