Cambrian swotting up for big test against students

-

THE game of the day in the JD Cymru South Division sees Cambrian and Clydach host leaders Swansea University in the Rhondda.

Dane Williams’ side secured a smart 2-1 away win in the Welsh Cup last weekend at Haverfordwest.

He’ll be hoping it can act as a springboard in the league as Cambrian haven’t picked up a three-pointer in their last five games.

Pontypridd Town face a difficult encounter tonight when they travel to Briton Ferry.

Ferry are the form horses at present and defeated STM 4-3 in their last league encounter.

Ponty beat Cwmamman United in their last league game, and defeated Llandrindod in the Welsh Cup last week, which should see them travel west with a little confidence for a point at least.

Taffs Well are on the road at Cwmbran Celtic tomorrow and will look for an away win to climb away from the relegation area.

Neither the Wellman or Celtic have won a league encounter since September 20, so a draw could well be on the cards.

Llantwit Major face a difficult and lengthy trip to Haverfordwest where any points return would be seen as a bonus for the Vale of Glamorgan club.

Caerau Ely face Goytre United this evening at Glanhafod Park in Port Talbot.

Goytre enjoyed a victory over Taffs Well in midweek and will be looking to make it a back-to-back wins against bottom-of-the-table Caerau, who have yet to chalk up a three-pointer this term.

STM Sports are in JD Welsh Cup action at Chepstow Town and the winners will travel to Rhyl in round three.

The St Mellons-based club will be gearing up for their Nathaniel MG Cup semi-final, which takes place next Saturday

at Llanrumney against Welsh Premier League team Aberystwyth.

In the Welsh League, Division One Ton Pentre travel to Risca United this evening. Bridgend Street entertain Abergavenny Town tomorrow at their Willows Ground while Dinas Powys host Port Talbot at the Murch.

In the JD Cymru Premier, former Swansea City captain Kristian O’Leary makes his bow as manager of Carmarthen tomorrow at the Cyncoed Campus as his new team take on Cardiff Met University (1430).

O’Leary makes it two ex-Swans in the dugouts as Christian Edwards will trying to make it a fruitless trip to the Welsh capital from the other technical area.

Home advantage against a team who are yet to chalk up a victory should mean a home banker for the students, but they were held to a 1-1 draw at home a fortnight ago against lowly Penybont.

Barry Town have had a fortnight to forget after slipping to a 4-1 loss at Caernarfon and a 4-0 defeat last Saturday against Connah’s Quay at Jenner Park.

The Linnets have a chance to get back to winning ways tomorrow when they travel to play Cefn Druids.

The Druids have hit form of late with three wins on the trot, though, and Hughie Griffiths’ North Wales team won’t make it easy for Gavin Chesterfield, who may juggle his pack after the last two games.

Mamadou Toure and Jordan Cotterall could make the starting XI and Cotterall particularly enjoyed his last visit to the Druids, when he recorded a hat-trick last season in a 5-2 win.

■ Wales will take on their English counterparts in an Over-60s Veterans fixture, to be staged in Ystrad Mynach, tomorrow.

The game kicks off at 3pm.

Daniel Jeffries scored a timely first goal for Penybont to grab a late winner against Airbus last weekend. Bont were scheduled to take on Caernarfon Town on Saturday, but have asked for the game to be postponed due to international call-ups
