Pet dog ‘left terrified’ after being run over on busy road

-

A PET dog that was run over several times on a busy road is set for a long recovery at a Welsh rescue home after being left “terrified” by the ordeal.

The chihuahua-cross dog was hit by a number of cars on the A472 near Pontypool last week and was rescued from the scene by officers from the RSPCA.

Having been handed over to Torfaen County Borough Council, the dog was transferred to Hope Rescue in Llanharan on Monday.

Despite beginning his recovery from his injuries – which include a fractured pelvis – he remains in a fragile state.

Ace, as he has been called by staff at the rescue centre, is being looked after as a “special case” in the hope that he will, in time, be ready to move into a new and loving home. “He is very, very nervous,” said Amy Greenfield, fundraising manager at Hope Rescue.

“He’s been through a real ordeal and he’s been left terrified. We are not physically handling him at the moment because of what he’s been through but we have a member of staff who is taking him on as a special case. She is sitting with him in his kennel and offering him treats.”

As well as recovering from a badly injured pelvis, Ace has a number of superficial injuries sustained in last Wednesday’s incident. The rescue centre said the best treatment for him at the moment was rest, before he underwent further x-rays.

Following an appeal, his lastknown owners have been traced, but the rescue centre said the owners did not want Ace to return home with them.

He will, therefore, remain at Hope Rescue for the foreseeable future.

“Some dogs are here for a period of a few weeks before they are rehomed, but with others it can take a lot longer,” said Amy.

“Ace is going to need a lot of attention before he is ready for rehoming. He will eventually go into a rehmoing programme but not until he is better.”

Hope Rescue takes in abandoned dogs and strays from all over South Wales. Ace was the 800th dog they had taken in this year already – almost as many as during the whole of 2018.
