RAISE A GLASS

- WITH JANE CLARE

for a roast-friendly red.

Aldi has introduced a handful of wines with a difference; the difference being that they are lesser-known grape varieties.

I’ll mention others in the next week or two, but for now in keeping with my toewarming reds theme, I’ve taken a sip of Argentinian

pictured right, £4.99.

Bonarda is Argentina’s second most popular grape and Aldi’s wine is plummy and zippy. It’s a little lacking fruit on the palate but it’s less than a fiver and comfort is needed in many ways in these strange times. The Aglianico is cherry-tipped and rich and rounded for less than a fiver.

I hugged a glass of English red close to my heart the other night. English red wines take some time to woo me, if at all, but the

(£17.99, Waitrose, pictured right) didn’t have to flirt with me for long before I was a pushover to its charms.

It won a gold medal at the Wine GB awards last year and we could all do with some golden moments right now.

The grapes are grown on the edge of the south Downs. Ah, a nose-dip delivered cranberries, plums and spice and then a savouring sip was rewarded with soft, gentle tannins, cherries and strawberries.

By the way,Bolney Wine Estate (bolneywineestate.com) is offering a complimentary delivery service for wine orders over £20 to suit these troubling times.

Also in my glass…

Being in lockdown is helping me develop positive habits. I’m not “nipping out” all the time to buy a bit of this or a bit of that. I’m making the most of what I have at home.

This was exactly the case when the lovely people from Whitley Neill sent me one of their cocktail recipes.
