A 21-YEAR-OLD man was shot in Cardiff yesterday.

Harris Avenue in Rumney was closed in both directions yesterday and there was a heavy police presence in the area.

Police said they were called to an address on the street at about 3.30pm.

South Wales Police said the investigation is being led by the Major Crime Investigation team. An incident room has also been set up.

A spokeswoman said: “At about 3.30pm today we were called to a serious assault in Harris Avenue, Rumney.

“A 21-year-old man has been taken to hospital with lacerations and gunshot injuries.

“The scene is currently sealed off and inquiries are continuing.”

An eyewitness at the scene said Harris Avenue was closed in both directions. They said police officers were monitoring the cordon last night.

The man, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I live close to there and couldn’t get past after work. I don’t know what’s happening but it looked really serious at the time.”

Specialist crime officers wearing protective gear were in attendance.

Rumney councillor Bob Derbyshire said he was shocked by the news.

He said: “I’m shocked and surprised by the news of the shooting. It’s not something that happens every day of the week, not in Rumney or in Cardiff.

“People shouldn’t be going out and using guns, it’s shocking. It is very sad that this has happened but I hope that the person who was shot is okay.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed they attended the scene at about 3.30pm and were assisting the police.

There was also a heavy police presence on Grand Avenue in Ely. However, it is not known if the two incidents are linked.

An Ely resident described the scene on

Grand Avenue as a heavy police presence was spotted in the area.

The man, who didn’t want to be named, said he was driving home when he saw a number of armed officers.

He said: “I was driving home around 4.30pm when I saw a number of police officers on Grand Avenue. There were armed police officers and a number of officers also.

“I drove down towards the old library and saw hundreds of police officers gearing up.”

The man said he was shocked and saddened to see this level of violence during the lockdown.

He said: “I was shocked and saddened to see what was happening. Around a hundred residents gathered on the street, which was clearly dangerous.

“It might lead to a spike in coronavirus cases as they weren’t keeping a twometre distance.

“Our prayers are with the family of the man who has been shot.”
