Pensioner ‘amazed’ by generosity

-

NEIGHBOURS have rallied to raise money for a pensioner who had £150 stolen while she clapped for NHS.

Janet Crimmins, 73, from Caerphilly, noticed £150 was missing from her home after she went stood outside and clapped for the NHS on Thursday.

Miss Crimmins noticed the money had gone missing from her purse after she had left her back door briefly unlocked.

She is considered vulnerable and said the money was for friends and family who had delivered food to her.

After reading her story, a number of residents in the community got together to reimburse her with the money and buy her gifts.

She said she was “overwhelmed” and “amazed” at the support shown to her by her local community.

“So many people have knocked on my door and given me gifts and food, it has been amazing,” she said.

“A taxi driver knocked on my door with his children and handed me the money. He said a number of people from the community and donated.

“It was crazy. I didn’t expect it and I didn’t ask for any of the money either.”

Miss Crimmins has been inundated with food and gifts and will be donating some of the food to those who need it in the community.

“My house is looking like a florist which I absolutely love,” she said.

“There are so many chocolates in my house and so much food. A local butcher knocked my door today and handed me a huge bag of fresh meat.

“I live on my own and don’t want to waste any food so

I’ll be handing it out to my neighbours.”

Miss Crimmins has lived on the estate for 51 years.

She said: “I’ve lived on the estate for so long we all know each other. This incident didn’t show me my community was amazing because I always knew this.

“Whoever stole the money probably wasn’t even from here as no one from here would do that. But I believe there are good and bad everywhere.”

Gwent Police appealed on Friday for information about the incident.

A spokesman said: “The incident is believed to have taken place at around 8.15pm on Thursday, April 16.

“We are appealing for any witnesses or any individuals who may have CCTV footage, dashcam footage from a vehicle on the street or information about this incident to contact Gwent Police on 101, quoting log reference 2000131035.”
