Woman who snatched man’s phone is jailed

IT MIGHT have been raining over the past two days, but April looks set to be one of the sunniest on record.

Days of uninterrup­ted sunshine and warm weather have been the norm during the first five weeks of lockdown.

And now the Met Office says

A WOMAN snatched a man’s phone as he called his friends after becoming separated from them during a night out.

Katie Evans quickly grabbed the iPhone as Lewis Rogers lifted it to his ear in Newport city centre during the early hours of the morning.

Sentencing her at Cardiff Crown Court, Judge Michael Fitton QC said: “You have clearly been stealing in order to fund your addiction to drugs.”

The court heard the incident happened in the early hours of July 28 last year in Newport city centre.

Matthew Cobbe, prosecutin­g, said Mr Rogers had been for a night out and became separated from his friends.

The court heard he was alone in the city centre at around 4.15am and put his phone to his ear as he tried to call his friends.

Mr Cobbe said Evans “snatched” the phone from his hand and ran away around the corner. provisiona­l informatio­n suggests that April 2020 is “now the sunniest on record”.

As of yesterday, it said 212.5 hours of sunshine had been recorded so far, with the previous record being 211.9 hours in 2015.

Despite the possible record, it will be a “cooler, more unsettled week”

The court heard Mr Rogers chased her into an alleyway then a man grabbed him from behind and assaulted him. Evans did not have anything to do with the violence.

Mr Rogers told a police officer in the city centre what had happened and police searched the area. for much of the UK as temperatur­es return to average for this time of year in the last days of the month, with some downpours expected, the Met Office has said.

The victim went to the Royal Gwent Hospital with head and neck pain but left an hour later without being seen.

In statement Mr Rogers said he was “shocked” by the incident and now feels anxious about going out. He said he tries not to go anywhere on his own, particular­ly when it is dark.

The court heard he used an app to trace his phone which was located at Clarence Place. Evans was caught on CCTV going back there.

Police searched her flat on August 4 but the phone was not recovered. Evans answered “no comment” to all the questions put to her in her police interview.

She was sent a postal requisitio­n on January 22 and entered a guilty plea at Newport Magistrate­s’ Court.

Prosecutor­s said she had 73 previous offences on her record including 36 for dishonesty.

She was sentenced in February for shopliftin­g, after targeting TK Maxx in Newport and Cwmbran, and finished that sentence at the beginning of April.

Evans, 33 , from Clarence Place in Newport, admitted theft. of Britain reach 29.4ºC.

The court heard she has completed a level one literacy course in custody and was hoping to do level two but the education programme has been disrupted by the pandemic.

Mr Williams said she has family support and is on a methadone prescripti­on, adding: “She is trying her utmost while in custody to address her offending behaviour.”

Judge Michael Fitton QC noted the incident happened at night as part of a group.

He told her: “You know perfectly well you are facing a prison sentence. The offence you have committed is, on any view, a serious offence.

“Your record of conviction­s, you and I both know, is a terrible one. You have clearly been stealing in order to fund your addiction to drugs.”

He accepted she did not know what the others were going to do.

There was an increase in the number of people out and about over the weekend as police issued a number of fines.
