What did those ‘useless’ oldies ever do for us?

-

In their day it was about the rich getting richer, throwing scraps to the poor

Roger Stone Machen

THERE’S a new law coming in. Everyone reaching 70 will be shot and their assets used to pay off the deficit (inherited by the previous government).

Old people know nothing. Even if they did, they have probably forgotten it. They are useless and lazy. It’s not as if they fought wars to save humanity or paid the price for coal and steel. It wasn’t they who contributed to society (National Health Service etc) for many years.

Other people put men on the moon, eradicated smallpox, saved the world from starving and split the atom. Old people are useless on computers; they can’t handle the complexity. It’s not like they could have invented it themselves.

Old people are mean to their children. They don’t give them enough money to buy houses, fast cars, nights out on the binge and drugs. They don’t appreciate how clever these young people are. They all got “A” grades, all shone at university and are chasing high-powered jobs in the City (Cardiff ) and some are in the corridors of power (Machen Rugby Club committee!).

Old people know nothing about politics. Today’s issues are all new to them. In their day it was about the rich getting richer, throwing scraps to the poor. It was about evicting people who couldn’t pay the rent. It was about pawn shops, money lenders, food banks. It’s so different now!

It’s lucky that old people are invisible. Just as well because they haven’t got anything interesting to say. They harp on about people called John Charles, Aneurin Bevan or Churchill. Who the hell is interested in them?

There’s a referendum on this new law and it is expected to return a record Yes vote. Bring it on!

How we can keep Nicola off TV

NICOLA STURGEON MSP and SNP leader has the charm, personality and TV persona of an East German border guard and her stilted appearances on the box have me looking for the strings held by her puppet master.

Fervent about separating Scotland from the Union, I have to wonder how it comes about that she makes so many TV appearances south of the border. Her stumbling defence of her health minister would have been laughable had it not been so pathetic.

If she does not restrain herself and stay only on Scottish TV we should threaten her with an attack of TV appearances from Wales showing our First Minister Mark Drakeford in action. He has the drive and enthusiasm of a flip-flop and if this was exposed north of the border it might convince her to stay up there. Should have her running for them hills.

Have faith and we can defeat virus

The word “coronavirus”, what does it really mean?

Let’s all unite together, the answers we will glean

Let’s put our hands together, and pray that we will find

An answer to this torment, affecting all our minds

This worldwide pandemic, the trouble it has caused

To millions of people who have lived through two world wars

To those in isolation, afraid and so alone

Looking through their windows, prisoners in their homes

The very old and young, the homeless who can’t cope

There has to be an answer, there has to be some hope

Towns and roads deserted, shops and venues ceased

To this enemy invasion, this unforgiving beast

To each of us, though rich and poor, we have a common bond

And rugged pathways must endure to reach the goal beyond

Politicians, nurses, doctors and front line

Advising us sincerely, this has to be a sign

That this virus will be beaten and surely go away

To help us face normality to live from day to day

The global pandemic has brought so many tears

Let’s all unite together, and chase away the fears

There has to be a crossroad, directing us the way

To a life, a better future, a bright and sunny day

To eradicate this virus would be our utmost dream

To walk amongst the fields of gold, enjoying pastures green Endurance is our motto, as days turn into night

The dawn will bring new meaning with victory in sight

If we have faith and trust, and wait with patience too

We’ll find our lives, like harvest time, will be enriched anew.

Seeking my former girlfriend from ‘60s

BACK in the Sixties I was an office boy with shipowners in Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff.

I lived in Fairwater. I met a young lady who worked for Deloitte, Plender and Griffiths on the corner of James Street and Bute Street named Catherine Nicholls, who lived in Beda Road, Canton. As boyfriend and girlfriend we had some wonderful times together until we drifted apart.

She later married, lived in Penarth and took the surname Annis.

If she or anyone she knows have details of her whereabouts I would love to hear from her.

It feels like we’re governed by clowns

THERE should be a public inquiry held regarding the way this Conservative government has mishandled the coronavirus problem.

Initially they should have done more to prevent the virus entering our shores, after all we are an island, with entry via port or airport, and at these points there should have been more stringent checks. Then there is the PPE fiasco, which has affected our health care workers, sometimes with devastating effect.

Then the Government are telling us to stay at home whilst allowing foreign nationals to fly in unchecked. I feel as though we are in a circus... and the clowns are in charge!

Contagion could be a hit all over again

THE 2011 film Contagion is enjoying a new lease of life on the internet.

It starred Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Damon and concerned a worldwide threat from a fatal virus.

If re-released into actual cinemas it could well prove a financial silver lining to the current dark cloud.
