WORKING hard to compete with the big boys Netflix and Amazon Prime, Apple TV+ today releases this very funny homegrown comedy with an all-star cast including Imelda Staunton, Phil Davis, Ophelia Lovibond and Oliver Chris.
Rafe Spall and Esther Smith play Jason and Nikki, a 30-something couple desperately trying to have a baby.
But unfortunately it’s the one thing they can’t do.
“So what now?” asks Jason. “A small piece of us dies and we carry on with whatever’s left,” says Nikki. “Oh well as long as you’ve got a plan.”
Then, of course, they have to deal with the endless baby showers, annoyingly smug and glowing pregnant friends and people who are generally winning at life – while they are just trying.
So they decide to adopt. But will a panel agree they are ready to be parents? They haven’t even got lampshades in all the bedrooms.
A comedy gem that might make you consider yet another pay-for streaming service.
FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER Channel 4, 10pm
THE moment has finally arrived. Adam and Jonny (Simon Bird and Tom Rosenthal) are bringing home their ‘females’, both called Lucy, to meet the parents.
Mum (Tamsin Greig) is beside herself, lighting scented candles, decorating the house with bouquets of flowers and turning on background music.
Dad (Paul Ritter) is even wearing a suit – although he looks like an undertaker.
Before all the awkward hilarity kicks off though, Adam and Jonny rush into the house first to lay down a few ground rules.
For mum: no embarrassing baby stories, no kissing them on the head and no crying. For dad: no talking about dustbins or how he once saw a man ‘kill a duck with a hammer’.
Lucy One (Pearl Mackie) and Lucy Two (Rebecca Humphries) are finally allowed inside, but immediately disaster strikes.
Dad has accidentally smashed a light bulb into mum’s chicken soup. But he’s picked out the main shards, so it will all be fine...
