PICK OF THE DAY VE DAY 75: A MUSICAL CELEBRATION

AS IF lockdown life wasn’t emotional enough, just wait until you see a special message from Her Majesty the Queen, speaking at the exact time her father King George VI spoke to the nation 75 years ago.

The televised address will be at exactly 9pm during this celebration show, from her own lockdown location of Windsor Castle.

On May 8, 1945, King George VI made one of the most significant speeches of his reign as peace finally fell at the end of the Second World War. Now his daughter addresses Britain during another dark time.

As if that wasn’t enough to prick the tear ducts, an amazing finale will see a special rendition of We’ll Meet Again.

The rousing performance will cap an hour of entertainment, hosted by Sophie Raworth, which will salute the

Second World War generation.

Until coronavirus, there had been plans for celebratory events and street parties, but this socially distanced concert will have to do.

Filmed in an iconic London location and featuring some of Britain’s biggest talent, across the evening, stars will deliver unique versions of well-known songs such as Bluebirds Over The White Cliffs Of Dover and When The Lights Go On Again.

The line-up includes Katherine Jenkins, Adrian Lester, Anton Du Beke, Shane Richie, Emma Barton, Beverley Knight, Helen George and Sharon D Clarke.

There will also be recorded interviews from veterans who share their stories, memories and photographs.

Stay tuned on BBC1 for VE Day: Remembering Victory, which sees entertainers and broadcasters recall the jubilation of that unforgettable day.
