The day Bellamy left Carra speechless on the pitch

-

FORMER Wales striker Craig Bellamy has never been one to shy away from voicing his opinion, and that view has been emphatically reinforced by ex-Liverpool striker Peter Crouch.

In his MailOnline column, Crouch has detailed an on-field exchange between Bellamy and Jamie Carragher, during a game between the Reds and Newcastle United.

Bellamy, a former Red himself, was on the opposition team and delivered a verbal volley that left Carragher “gobsmacked”, according to Crouch.

The England striker was asked a question in his column about “who was the worst for ‘verbals’ during a match?”

Crouch replied: “How things changed through the course of my career. When I started out, loads of people would be jabbering away through games.

“Kevin Muscat, for instance, was terrifying because if he said something you knew he meant it.

“He was a very aggressive man, to put it mildly.”

Crouch then turns to the Bellamy incident, while also citing former Wales international Robbie Savage as another contender for chief wind-up merchant.

“Robbie Savage and Craig Bellamy were relentless,” Crouch added.

“Jamie Carragher tells a story about Bellers. Carra played a ball up to Robbie Fowler and then had a go at him for not running into space.

“Bellers, playing for Newcastle at the time, turned to Carra and said: ‘Who the **** do you think you are you talking to? That’s Robbie Fowler!’

“Even when it had nothing to do with him, Bellers could not help getting involved.

“Carra was gobsmacked.

“In my final few years, those types of players had all but disappeared.”
