Summer nights at the drive-in cinema
A DRIVE-IN cinema is planning to come to Cardiff this summer, hosting three days of movie fun and promising “a safe environment” for audiences during the coronavirus pandemic.
Called @TheDriveIn, the cinema will screen six shows from August 20-23 with a family friendly afternoon screening and a late night viewing each day.
Organisers say ’80s classics and blockbusters from the 2010s will be preceded by a range of entertainment, including stand up comedy, bingo or silent car discos.
The cinema will use radio transmission kits to broadcast sound to each car’s radio. All vehicles then park around a massive LED screen to watch the film.
Food and snacks will be available to order through a mobile app, and roller waiters will bring your order to a drop-off point by your car.
Though a number of summer events have already been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak, organisers say the cinema has social distancing built in and guests and employees won’t need to mingle.
The company said: “Cars parked over two metres apart provide naturally builtin social distancing and entry will be via licence plate checking, meaning no interaction between staff and guests is necessary.
“Toilet facilities and strict hygiene measures in line with government guidelines will ensure a safe environment for all, providing not only a coronavirusproof way of going out, but a rare opportunity to bring back a few hours of normal life.”
The cinema is also honouring the NHS by reserving 10 free car spaces at each event for key workers.
Tickets for the cinema cost £35 per car and will go on sale online on May 27. The venue for the event in Cardiff has not yet been announced.
