Set to enjoy a warm, dry spell

can see for miles. Over the coming days, high pressure remains in charge, allowing slightly milder air to move in from the Atlantic.

“Over the weekend the high weather will slip over the Bay of Biscay, keeping southern Britain dry. Saturday will be dry, with a mix of cloud and some sunshine, with temperatures a little higher. More dry and bright weather on Sunday.”

But it is next week when the much warmer weather will move in.

Derek added: “A plume of warm weather will spread across the UK, and that means rising temperatures. Warming up next week, with a taste of summer. It has been a very dry month so far, with very little rain in the forecast.”

It’s a marked contrast to the wettest spring in Wales when, in 1920, 505.4mm of rain fell between March and May, while the driest was in 1893 when just 105.8mm fell in that period.

Natural Resources Wales has said the nation is not in drought, but it is monitoring the situation closely.

A spokesman said: “Coming off the back of an exceptionally wet February, we have had a relatively dry spring so far, with Wales experiencing 48% of the long-term average (1961-90) rainfall for April.

“River flows have therefore been in recession, as we’d expect in response with this level of rainfall, leading to relatively low water levels for the time of year.

“In terms of drought status, we are currently at ‘normal’ status and we are monitoring the situation and reviewing our position regularly in line with our drought plan.”

The agency said its website will be updated with any changes to its drought status, in addition to highlighting any environmental concerns that it may have.
