A LEADING pharmaceutical company has lodged plans to build a new packaging building on its Tredegar site which would create 50 full-time jobs.

PCI Pharma Services is proposing to add to its facilities on the Tafarnaubach Industrial Estate as it expands its operations.

The firm, which employs around 440 staff at Tredegar, announced plans for a £9m expansion of its facilities in December.

Plans submitted to Blaenau Gwent council include a new packaging line building, a retaining wall and a covered pedestrian walkway linking the site to a new car park which has already been approved.

“The vision for the proposed development is to deliver a packaging line building which will result in a series of economic benefits not only for the operator but also in the form of significant job creation,” a design and access statement says.

“It is considered that the majority of positions will be occupied by local persons, as such, the scheme will contribute to the economic development of Blaenau Gwent county borough.”

Fifty full-time positions created under the plans.

The building will also connect with a recently approved containment facility and its car park which has 180 spaces.

The company has said it plans to complete its expansion by the end of 2021, with the overall project creating 50 to 100 jobs.

Tredegar Town Council has backed the plans in a pre-application consultation, welcoming the jobs boost and creation of new parking spaces for the estate.

First announcing the plans, Dr Richard Yarwood PCI Pharma Services’ chief scientific officer previously will be said: “Pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies are innovating drug treatments today at a rapid pace and in greater volume.

“As the market continues to grow, we’ve seen an increasing number of clients look to us to provide manufacturing services across the spectrum of dosage forms.

“The expansion at Tredegar will double our large-scale manufacturing capacity to ensure that new and existing customers have their development and supply needs met now and in the future.”

The plans will be assessed by Blaenau Gwent council in the coming months.
