Man arrested following alleged stabbing at castle

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an alleged stabbing at Caerphilly Castle.

Emergency services were called to the historic landmark at around 8.50pm on Thursday following reports of an assault.

Gwent Police confirmed that a 26-year-old man suffered stab wounds to the abdomen and was taken to the University Hospital of Wales.

He is currently in a stable condition.

A 30-year-old man from the Deri area of Caerphilly was also treated for “superficia­l wounds” at the scene.

Officers yesterday arrested a 23-year-old man, also from Caerphilly.

Detective Inspector Leigh Holborn said: “Following our appeal for informatio­n, we arrested a 23-year-old Caerphilly man who we believe has recently sustained injuries to his ear, face and leg.

“We have reason to believe that these injuries could have been caused during the incident in Caerphilly Castle and he has been taken to the University Hospital Wales in police custody.

“He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and Section 18 grievous bodily harm.

“Our team of dedicated officers investigat­ing are now trying to determine the circumstan­ces around this incident.

“We continue to appeal for anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in this area around the time of 8pm and 8.50pm to please contact Gwent Police.

“This incident is obviously very concerning for local residents.

“We are now implementi­ng a variety of patrol methods in the area to assist us in our investigat­ion and there will be an increased police presence throughout Caerphilly.

“A police cordon is also in place, while our investigat­ion continues.”
