Another area that has been hit by vehicle crime recently is the Gaer, in Newport.

One resident, Pauline Grimaldi, said her son’s car was broken into and a dashcam was stolen during lockdown. She has CCTV outside her house, which picked up the alleged incident.

However, she said this type of vehicle crime has been going on for more than a year.

The 59-year-old said: “We’ve got CCTV, it’s motion-activated and we’ve seen him on numerous occasions trying the doors.

“He just goes straight down, going street by street, I think.

“I checked my CCTV because it went off at about 2.55am, and I could see someone at the car.”

These incidents come after residents were warned of an increase in vehicle crimes in the Allt-yr-yn area of Newport.

The ward is now a policing priority following six reported incidents in 28 days.

Sergeant Roland Giles said: “We urge residents to ensure they are doing all they can to keep vehicles safe and secure. We are carrying out focused patrols overnight to target these offences. This is a policing priority in this area.”

Inspector Martin Cawley, from the Newport east patrol team, said: “Looking at Newport as a city, we have seen an increase in reports of vehicle crime.”
