Fly-tipping fury as dumped waste blights rural lane

- NINO WILLIAMS Reporter nino.williams@walesonline.co.uk

A HUGE pile of waste has been dumped on a quiet driveway, blocking the way past.

A sofa, mattress and door were abandoned on the lane off Caerphilly Road, close to Lower Machen quarry, in Draethen, at about 4pm on Friday.

The mountain of refuse, which also includes children’s toys, metal and plastics, completely obstructs the way past.

The lane leads towards the home of former Conservative AM William Graham.

Mr Graham said: “The footpath has proved very popular during lockdown; it hasn’t been used as much as it has over the past month.

“It’s such a shame to see people dumping their waste in this way.

“I think during lockdown, some people have just decided they can’t be bothered to wait to dispose of their rubbish as they should.

“It isn’t nice to see, but I have reported it, but as soon as people stop doing this sort of thing the better”.

Craig ward councillor David Williams added: “Fly-tipping does seem to have become a bit of a problem. We’ve had two or three cases of it recently in my ward.

“I think it is because as the economy is starting to get going again, some unscrupulous individuals think it is easier to dispose of their waste in the countryside rather than queuing up to put their stuff in the tip, or because private contractors may not be open yet.

“The council has been very good at clearing things up, and this is an adopted road, so I can’t see any reason why they shouldn’t clear it away.

“It has been reported, and hopefully it will be cleared soon”.
