Show some compassion to our feathered friends

-

I HAVE been quite saddened to hear of the culling of pigeons in order to control their numbers. To slaughter a sentient being that can think and feel pain is barbaric.

They pose no threat; they are completely peaceful and tame. What harm are they doing? Surely our feathered friends deserve a bit more compassion.

How does one species have the right to rule over another? This is not just brutality, it is tyranny. How do we feed ducks in the lake and then butcher a species because we consider them a nuisance?

PETA India has a policy of feeding pigeons (as well as other animals like cats and dogs) whose food sources have disappeared during the Covid-19 crisis.

Says who that there are too many? We would be better looking after them properly: give them bread rather than kill them for stupid reasons. Their spiritual value is infinite. They have a similar mentality to cats and dogs. It is time to rethink our entire approach to the animals that live alongside us. Pigeons are not vermin; they are an intelligent form of life – maybe angels – that live among us to guide us.

Animal Aid urges any organisation considering or undergoing a pigeon cull to instead seek out longterm, effective and humane solutions such as deterrence spikes on buildings, balloon kites and properly fitted humane netting.

Is it not possible that the slaughter of this noble bird could create a new disease?
