Give Rob a chance – Edwards

SHAUN Edwards says rugby must give fellow former Welsh coach Rob Howley a second chance following the betting scandal uncovered at the start of last autumn’s World Cup campaign.

Edwards and Howley became Warren Gatland’s trusted lieutenants as Welsh rugby went on a 12-year magic carpet ride under the New Zealander, bringing in three Six Nations Grand Slams, another title in 2013 plus two World Cup semi-final tickets.

But Howley’s time as attack coach came to an abrupt end in Japan, as details of his betting on matches, including some involving Wales, emerged.

He recently spoke about it all for the first time, revealing how guilt over the death of his sister lead to his actions.

His 18-month ban, with nine suspended, ends this month and French defence coach Edwards claims Howley will return bigger and better.

at the end of his three-year ‘bloodgate’ ban with Harlequins as someone who has been there and done it.

Edwards told MailOnline: “I’ve known Rob for nearly 20 years now. He came to Wasps as a player in 2002 and he was one of the best players I ever coached. He’s gone on to become a very successful coach as well.

“He made a mistake and he’s owned up to it, so let’s forgive and forget. Richards made a mistake, put his hands up and came back a credit to the game. I’m sure Rob will do the same.”

Howley was heavily linked with coaching the Italian national team before the betting ban and more recently with the vacant post at Gloucester.

Edwards believes Howley “has a lot to offer” the Gallagher Premiership side should he get the job.

“He’s had 12 years as an international coach and experienced a lot of things,” added Edwards.

“He’s done a few hard yards and he knows what it’s all

about.”
