Weapons and drugs seized in stop and search operation

-

SOUTH Wales Police seized weapons, drugs and cash from the streets of Cardiff in just one week as part of a nationwide operation.

From June 9 to 14, officers at South Wales Police took eight weapons, drugs with a street value of around £900 and more than £5,700 in cash off the streets of Cardiff.

As part of Operation Sceptre – a nationwide campaign that runs twice a year to tackle knife crime – officers also carried out 61 stop and searches and made 11 arrests.

Superintendent Wendy Gunney, South Wales Police lead for Operation Sceptre, said: “Police forces across the country have recorded a rise in knife crime, but mercifully the level of those offences in South Wales is not the same as in other parts of the UK – with knife crime remaining rare for the vast majority of communities here.

“But we can never be complacent. Every incident involving a knife has consequences for all those involved, and so this is an issue we take extremely seriously.

“Under Operation Sceptre, we have put in place a number of measures to address any concerns communities may have, and clamp down on those who are carrying and using knives.”

This follows a successful start of the month for the team. In the first five days of the month, Cardiff police carried out 43 stop and searches and made nine arrests.

They also seized three weapons, drugs with a street value of £1,360 and cash.
