Parties on doorstep of senedd

-

CARDIFF Bay’s Roald Dahl Plass has been the venue for a number of late-night parties during the heatwave, according to local residents.

People living near the area, which is just metres from the Senedd building, have said around 200 gathered in the area late on Thursday and into the early hours of Friday morning.

They said music went on into the early hours of the morning and that there have been gatherings over three nights.

A resident said: “We have listened to loud music, shouting, the sound of cars driving in and out of Bute Crescent, which is a dead end, and the revving of car engines at all hours.

“We have also watched drunken behaviour, the beautiful Plass, streets and private property being used as toilet facilities, as well as the selling, snorting and sniffing of drugs.

“On top of that we have been left every day with the carnage of the leftovers and the empties strewed across the pathways, our doorways.

“It is right on the doorstep of the Senedd.”

Another added: “We are all deeply annoyed and upset that the lovely Bay area is being abused in this manner.”

Witnesses said there was no proper social distancing and no-one was supervising.

And further along the coast, residents of Barry Island were “devastated” and appalled by scenes at the popular seaside resort on the hottest day of the year so far.

The “Island” on Thursday was said to be full of big groups of people and the beach was left litter-strewn following a day and night of thoughtless visitors.

Vale of Glamorgan council cleared 10 tonnes of waste on Thursday and said most was alcohol and barbecue-related – two things that are banned on the island.

After dark, cars were spotted on the pedestrianised area under the Eastern Shelter and vehicles also parked illegally over pedestrian and coastguard access points.

Resident Delme Parfitt was on a family walk in the town and said there were “large boorish parties of people and loud music”, and the Island “lacked a police presence despite thousands still being there”.

Mr Parfitt also said: “Social distancing was ignored. Open smoking of cannabis. Obscene amounts of litter, cleansing teams were there but were overwhelmed.

“(There was) extensive evidence of use of legal highs (silver canisters) and widespread drinking from plastic cups. Parking free-for-all on doubleyellows and blocking pedestrian and coastguard access points.”
