Coastal locations like a rubbish dump after hottest day of year

-

PARTS of the South Wales coastline were left in a disgusting state yesterday, on the morning after the hottest day of the year.

Despite current coronavirus guidelines in Wales, stating that only people from two different households are able to meet outdoors, thousands flocked to tourist spots around the region as temperatures rose to 31.4°C in Wales.

But images from Cardiff Bay reveal the amount of mess that was left behind.

Pictures from Roald Dahl Plass show bottles, plastic bags, cigarette butts and cans littered everywhere.

Similar scenes were captured in Ogmore-by-Sea after a mass gathering of young people in the area on Thursday night.

And leaving rubbish behind has been a major headache for areas across the UK, especially in the hot weather.

Visit Cardiff Bay on Twitter said: “We want all visitors to be able to enjoy the beauty of Cardiff Bay.

“Please don’t treat it like a rubbish tip and ruin it for others – put your litter in the bins provided, or if they’re full, take it home with you.”

A spokesman for Cardiff council said: “With the recent warm weather and the lockdown starting to ease, we appreciate residents want to spend more time outside.

“What isn’t acceptable is for residents to leave their litter in parks and open spaces, ruining them for everyone else, and expecting someone else to clear up the mess they’ve left behind.

“The pandemic is not over and the council is using the resources available to us to ensure we can deliver the best possible services for the residents of Cardiff. People need to take responsibility for their own waste. If the litter bin is full, please take your litter home with you to dispose of correctly.”

Images from Ogmore-by-Sea yesterday, meanwhile, showed overflowing bins and rubbish strewn all around the beach.

Staff from Vale of Glamorgan council were joined by local residents early yesterday morning as the clear-up began.

Local residents filled more than 33 bags of rubbish that had been left behind.
