Doubt over date for gyms and pools to reopen

-

PEOPLE in Wales still have no idea when they will be able to go to an indoor gym or swimming pool in Wales.

Gym opened in England last week and many people in Wales are desperate to know when they can next attend a spin class, play indoor sports like badminton or squash, go for a swim, pound a treadmill or lift some weights.

There had been hope that the First Minister would set a date for reopening at the Welsh Government’s next three-week review on Friday.

Speaking at the Welsh Government press conference this afternoon Finance Minister Rebecca Evans said: “On indoor gyms and pools I know they are both areas where people are really keen to get back to so Welsh Government has its threeweekly cycle of reviewing the regulations.

“I know that there is particular focus now on indoor gyms and swimming pools with colleges in government having requested specific advice on those two areas because we recognise how keen people are to get back to those activities.”

However people hoping to get their hands on some dumbbells soon may not get the news they hope this week as Ms Evans also said that there were other priorities for lifting restrictions.

She added: “I can’t give you a date right now for when we would be looking to reopen swimming pools and indoor gyms but we do have a meeting of cabinet later on today and we will be discussing those three-weekly reviews at that meeting so inevitably there will be discussion about swimming pools and indoor gyms.

“The First Minister said when he spoke at the last three-week review if there was particular headroom he was particularly keen to explore what more we could do to support people to see visit more of their friends and see more of their family and more human contact as well so I think that is an area that we can certainly expect to be saying more about shortly.”
