The princess diaries

-

PRINCESS Anne is not the princess of fairy tales. She doesn’t like wearing a tiara, refused titles for her children and forged her own independent path in the royal family.

But she is the hardest working royal, with more than 500 engagements a year – a royal very much in the public eye but who doesn’t crave the limelight.

“Sitting still doesn’t happen very much,” she says in this landmark documentary.

With exclusive interviews and access to Princess Anne and her family, this fascinating film celebrates the Queen’s daughter as she approaches her 70th birthday next month.

It’s a revealing insight, capturing a quietly bold royal who has a love of horses, hard work and a mischievous sense of humour. Just wait until you hear what she thinks of TV’s The Crown.

Her children Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall talk fondly of being raised by a Royal Olympian, her annoying ability to remember everything and trying to ditch the grandkids with her on Sundays.

Cameras also catch up with Princess Anne over lockdown. Watch out for one funny scene when Princess Anne has to join a conference call with her mother.

“You should have six people on your screen,” she says. “I can see four,” replies the Queen.

Looking back over her life, the film revisits Anne’s childhood, education, her interest in fashion, competing in horse events, the kidnapping attempt of 1974 and joining the Army.

“She’s got so much more energy than anyone I know at 70,” says Peter. “She always says she doesn’t have very good role models for slowing down.”
