Two charged with burglary after homes are targeted

TWO people have been charged with burglary following incidents in Newport.

Gwent Police said three properties on Abberley Hall Road, Cleeve Grange Crescent and Pendragon Grove on the Mon Bank estate were targeted on Sunday, July 26.

The force said a 38-year-old man from Newport was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, burglary, going equipped for theft, using threatenin­g or abusive language and two counts of vehicle interferen­ce following an investigat­ion.

He has since been charged with attempted burglary, burglary, taking a vehicle without consent and three counts of vehicle interferen­ce. He was remanded into custody.

A Gwent Police spokesman said a 27-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assault by beating of an emergency worker, attempted burglary, burglary, going equipped for theft, obstructin­g an officer in execution of their duty and vehicle interferen­ce.

She was later charged with attempted burglary, burglary, common assault of an emergency worker, obstructin­g of an officer, taking a vehicle without consent and three counts of vehicle interferen­ce. She has been released on conditiona­l bail.

PC Abbie Hackney, of Gwent Police’s east priority policing team, said: “We were received a report of a theft of a vehicle at an address in Cleeve Grange Crescent at around 6.25am on Sunday, July 26.

“This was followed by further reports of incidents at properties in Abberley Hall Road and Pendragon Grove, as well as Mendalgief Road.

“These offences include attempted burglary, burglary and vehicle interferen­ce.

“We understand that this can be concerning for residents who live in this area. We are currently looking at increasing patrols in these areas in order provide reassuranc­e to our communitie­s.

“We would urge people to call in at the time they see any suspicious activity. We are asking people to be vigilant and secure their property best they can and invest in CCTV and alarms if possible.

“We are appealing for any witnesses or any individual­s who may have CCTV footage, dashcam footage from a vehicle or informatio­n about this incident to contact Gwent Police on 101, quoting log references: 2000266715 (Cleeve Grange Crescent); 2000267474 (Abberley Hall Road); 2000267044 (Pendragon Grove) and 2000267037 (Mendalgief Road).”
