Big Nick calls it quits after here’s what he plans next...

something I would be big into, I’d probably say not so much. But I am big on off the field stuff, bringing families into play, making the entire environment one, not just the players here and the backroom staff there. It’s about making it a family environment. So that’s the part I do want to play in rugby, whether it be with the Blues, I’m not sure.

It wouldn’t be so much the coaching side, but the behind-thescenes side.

I think I have got too much experience, too many years of playing, not to give back to the game of rugby. It’s been extremely giving to me personally.

Q: You have done close protection security training. Is that an area you are looking to go into maybe? A: Yes, I’ve always wanted to do close protection work. Obviously, I took the scenic route by playing rugby for so long!

It’s still something I am keen to do and I’m looking at rolling into that industry once all this is settled with Covid. For now, I get to spend time with my wife and kids and let the body rest and let the mind come to peace with retirement.

Q: You have spoken about how much of a toll rugby has taken on your body. If a youngster asked you now whether they should take up the game, what would you say to them?

A: Definitely, go for it. I was born a bit larger than some other people so it would have been a waste had I wasted that.

If a bloke wants to give it a crack, give it a crack. I’m not going to lie to them, I’m not going to say it’s all peaches and cream. There’s the good times, but then there’s also the bad times. I have had a few people ask me advice and it’s still the same now, just to have a bit of fun because, before you know it, you are announcing your retirement, as I have this week.

Q: What would be you final thoughts as you hang up your boots?

A: Just what an amazing ride it’s been these last 16 years.

To all the supporters and the fans, thanks for your love and support.

To all the coaches and my rugby brothers, nothing will ever be able to replace the camaraderie and brotherhood that rugby has given us.

To my family, I hope I have made you all proud and thank you for the everlasting support. Last, but not least, my backbone - my wife and my three beautiful daughters.

I love you.

Diolch and fa’afetai lava.
