Red Arrows in city flypast to mark VJ Day

- JILLIAN MACMATH Reporter jillian.macmath@reachplc.com

THE Red Arrows will return to the skies over Wales on Saturday to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Japan Day.

VJ Day – which is commemorated annually on August 15 – marks the day that Japan surrendered, ending the Second World War.

In the first such flight since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Red Arrows will perform a UK-wide flypast tribute over Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff and London.

The tribute is one of the few physical events taking place to mark VJ Day this year due to the coronavirus pandemic and restrictions on mass gatherings.

Prince Charles, accompanied by the Duchess of Cornwall, will lead the UK in a national moment of remembrance and thanksgiving for all those who served in the Far East.

A two-minute silence will be held at 11am at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire as part of a special broadcast on BBC One between 9.30 and 11.30am. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this event will not be open to the public.

The Red Arrows flypasts will follow the remembrance events, though the exact timings have not yet been confirmed.

They will begin before flying over and London.

Ahead of VJ Day, the elite pilots are scheduled for a practice session over North Wales today.

After being largely grounded due to the coronavirus pandemic, the aerial display team is set to rehearse at RAF Valley in Anglesey between 12.45pm and 1.30pm.

Those lucky enough to be in the area are likely to see the distinctive jets practising their famous formations. in Edinburgh Belfast, Cardiff
