FAREWELL TO TEEN BIKER
OFF-ROAD bikers turned out for a final farewell to a 13-year-old boy who died taking part in the sport he loved.
Cory Hewer, from the Ebbw Vale area, was involved in an accident on Sunday, July 19, at a motocross track in Aberbeeg, Cwm.
The teenager and popular young rugby player died of his injuries but saved the lives of five others after his family donated his organs following the crash.
Because of Cory’s love of motocross bikers from across South Wales came to pay their respects as the funeral procession left his home.
Team-mates from the Ebbw Vale Steelers where Cory played rugby as part of the under-13s team also lined the street to show their support for the teen’s family.
Police had warned people not to ride any off-road bikes on public roads during the funeral, but they were allowed to form a procession to the end of Cory’s street.
One of the organisers said there had been a great turnout of support from the family.
“It was very moving,” he said. Family left messages in tribute to the teenager, who would have been 14 later this year, and a floral tribute in the shape of a motocross bike also accompanied the coffin in the hearse that was pulled by a motorbike.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Cory’s family. More than £5,600 has already been donated.
At the time of Cory’s death his mum Vicky said: “We would like to thank everyone for their kind support and generosity at this tragic time. Cory was a very happy little lad who loved his rugby and motocrossing.
“He was a cheeky, funny, loving boy and will be missed very much. He passed away doing a sport that he loved the most and was so brave donating his organs.
“Our lives will never be the same without him.”
