Cyclists warned to be on guard after thefts along taff trail

-

POLICE are warning cyclists travelling along the Taff Trail to be extra vigilant.

It come after what they have described as “unusual thefts” in the Llandaff and Llandaff North areas over the last two weekends.

In separate thefts, two cyclists were flagged down by individuals claiming to need help, only to have their bikes stolen.

The first was at around 5.50pm on Saturday, September 26, near the Llandaff rowing club.

Police say a man in his 20s stopped to help a teenage male who appeared to be having problems with his own bike.

The suspect, aged around 16 to 18, then rode off on the man’s Enduro black and green electric bike in the direction of Radyr.

A week later, on Saturday, October 3, at around 2pm, a 14-year-old boy had his bike stolen in Hailey Park by a man asking for help in finding his dog.

The teenager’s orange Scott bike was stolen but later found following an appeal on social media by his family.

Pc Helen Abdullahi from the Fairwater Neighbourhood Police Team said: “The Taff Trail is a fantastic cycle route that is used safely by many members of the community each day.

“So it is a real shame that we are now having to advise people to exercise caution when someone asks for help.

“Enquiries have been carried out but unfortunately without the usual investigative opportunities such as CCTV and house to house enquiries, we as yet have not be able to identify those responsible.”
