Barry and Bont looking to extend winning runs

-

BARRY Town and Penybont carried on their good form of late in midweek to keep up their momentum in the Cymru Premier League.

Gavin Chesterfield’s Barry made it five wins on the bounce at Jenner Park against Cardiff Met University on Tuesday evening.

A David Cotterill strike was enough for the Linnetts to defeat an under-strength student team and that was after an excellent 2-1 away win at Aberystwyth last weekend when Kayne McLaggon and Jordan Cotterill were both on the score sheet.

Barry are now in third spot in the table and they travel to an out-of form

Newtown today where another victory is definitely possible.

Ex Welsh international Cotterill seems to be settling in at Barry and he could be a key figure at Latham Park as the Linnetts go for six in a row.

Penybont manager Rhys Griffiths polished his boots in midweek and came off the bench at Haverfordwest to grab himself a brace in his teams excellent 4-0 win at the Bridge Meadow stadium.

Daniel Jefferies and Oliver Dalton also contributed.

That made it three wins in a row for Penybont and took them as high as fifth in the table, which is a vast improvement on ‘Bont’s struggles last season.

The acid test as to how much further they can climb may come today when TNS visit the SDM stadium.

Last season’s runners-up are keen to claim their title back and have scored twelve goals without reply in their last two games.

A point from this encounter would put the seal on a marvellous couple of weeks for Penybont, in what could be their coming of age season in the Cymru Premier.

Cardiff Met University’s season doesn’t get any easier when the students entertain the reigning champions and current leaders Connahs Quay Nomads at their Cyncoed campus.

It’s been a difficult couple of weeks for Christian Edwards, whose injury list is most probably longer than most Christmas present lists.

On Tuesday evening, with a depleted squad, the students went down 1-0 at Barry but still gave a decent performance which, with a bit luck, could have earned a point.

Today will be a battle against a very physical outfit who can also play football and Andy Morrison’s Nomads are in no mood to relinquish the crown they earned last season for the first time in their history.

A home point would be like picking up three for the Met but the smart money says the champions may just have too much for Edwards’ depleted squad at present.
