Think 20mph speed limit will make our streets safer

-

THE World Health Organisation has mandated 20mph speed limits in urban areas throughout the world, as motor vehicles are a major killer.

A pedestrian hit by a car at 30mph will probably die and a pedestrian hit at 20mph will probably live.

Many residents in Fairwater have signed a petition calling for road safety cameras and 20mph speed limits throughout the community. While other areas with Labour councillors have had 20mph zones introduced, the north-west of the city has been largely ignored. Fairwater, Ely, Llandaff and Radyr have hardly any 20mph zones.

Streets with 20mph zones are pedestrian and cyclist-friendly and make the chances of serious injury to a child involved in an accident much less likely. Indeed they make streets much pleasanter places for people to walk, talk, meet and for children to play. The streets are less noisy and polluted with exhaust fumes.

The petition for safer streets, 20mph zones and effective enforcement will be presented to the next Cardiff council meeting.

Fairwater would like to join the rest of the world. Safe streets and 20mph zones that are enforced. Councillors Neil McEvoy MS, Lisa Ford, Keith Parry

Welsh confrontation.

Chief among the protagonists are two of my political representatives, Alun Cairns MP and Andrew Davies MS, both of whom have claimed on TV that the Welsh Governments decision is based on “antiEnglish” sentiment, which is clearly not the case.

As both politicians well know, the travel ban covers the whole of the UK, applies equally to Scotland and Northern Ireland and simply mirrors the restrictions already in place for people in Wales. Sadly I can only conclude the recent comments are intentional and designed to stir up bad feelings.

Have our politicians learnt nothing from the tragic death of MP Jo Cox, whose murder just four years ago was fuelled by ill-considered rhetoric? By all means, Mr Cairns and Mr Davies, argue against WG policy but don’t stir up tensions and xenophobia through deliberately misleading and inaccurate statements.

Have our politicians learnt nothing from the tragic death of MP Jo Cox?
