GRIEVING FAMILY PAY TRIBUTE TO ‘GENTLE, LOVING’ GRANDAD, WHILE MURDER INVESTIGATION POLICE ARREST 21-YEAR-OLD
POLICE have launched a murder investigation into the death of a man at a house in Cardiff.
A 21-year-old man has been arrested following the incident at Cypress Crescent, St Mellons, on Friday evening, which also left a 50-year-old woman suffering serious injuries.
The family of the dead man last night paid tribute to a “gentle, loving” family man.
Michael Gayle, 54, died at the scene, despite the efforts of the emergency services and members of the public who came to his aid.
His family said: “Michael was a gentle, loving man who doted on his lifelong partner, Amanda, and their four children.
“He was an adoring grandad with the kindest heart, whose smile always lit up the room.
“Michael enjoyed a private life with his family close at all times.
“Michael’s way of life did not associate with death – he believed life is eternal. Although we will soon be laying him to rest, it was important to him that we know he is forever present and his soul lives on. We take peace from that.
“He spent his life loving, guiding and protecting us.
“We thank everyone for their heartfelt messages at this difficult time and we appreciate your support.”
South Wales Police said officers were called to reports of a serious assault at 8pm on Friday.
Despite efforts to save him, Mr Gayle died.
A woman was taken to the city’s University Hospital of Wales, where she remained over the weekend, with serious injuries which aren’t believed to be life-threatening.
A 21-year-old man, who police say is known to the victims, was arrested on Newport Road a short time after the incident was reported.
He remained in police custody last night.
A police spokesperson said: “South Wales Police is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident.”
On Saturday, detectives said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident but they appealed for anyone with information that could assist the invesitgation to come forward.
A spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance Trust said they were called at 8.06pm and sent one ambulance and two rapid response vehicles to the scene.
The air ambulance also landed near the address.
