Rules mean you can buy fireworks

RULES surrounding the purchase of fireworks in Wales have been shared by the Welsh Government.

The confirmation was made ahead of Bonfire Night next week with many wondering if they fall within the list of items deemed ‘essential’ shoppers can buy between now and November 9.

And, while fireworks are deemed nonessential the Welsh Government now say the can be bought along with essential shopping.

Going to just buy fireworks is not however considered a reasonable excuse to leave home.

Other non-essential items such as clothes, toys and Halloween costumes remain out of bounds.

A Welsh Government spokeswoman said: “We’ve clarified that a sensible system should be introduced whereby customers can ask to buy non-essential items by exception under the regulations - i.e. if there is an emergency/welfare reasons why someone needs to buy clothes etc, then that should be facilitated. “But that is the exception. “These restrictions are in place to stop the spread of coronavirus and save lives.”

Organised firework displays have been cancelled across Wales this year meaning more families who are subjected to stricter lockdown rules may look to hold their own displays at home.

With that in mind, Fire and Rescue Service are warning people to take extra care on Bonfire Night (November 5) and have issued safety advice.

Justin Evans, Head of Prevention and Protection for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The number of incidents involving fireworks and bonfires we attend has reduced dramatically as the public have listened to our plea to attend organised displays rather than setting off their own fireworks at home.

“We are concerned that the cancellation of organised fireworks displays could lead to an increase in home displays and possible injuries and we are urging people to think twice about using fireworks at home.

“If you do decide to let off fireworks or have a bonfire, we would appeal to everyone to show respect by following the advice set out here.”

Most major supermarkets have confirmed they will be selling fireworks this year in Wales.

Firebreak lockdown rules mean indoor and outdoor gatherings with people you don’t live with are banned.

Setting fireworks off in a park or other public open space is also against the rules.

It’s illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under 18 and for those below this age to carry them in public.
