Tributes pour in for inspiratio­nal popular teacher

HUNDREDS of people have paid tribute on social media after a popular secondary school teacher died.

Angela Stanton taught English and drama at Afon Tâf High in Troedyrhiw for more than 27 years.

Head teacher Stuart James paid tribute to the popular teacher, who he said had died in hospital.

Writing on the school website, Mr James said: ”It is with great sadness that we are informing you of the death of Miss Angela Stanton. Angela passed away on Thursday in hospital.

“Angela was a teacher at Afon Tâf for many years and will be sadly missed and remembered by pupils and staff, both past and present.

“Her death will have a deep impact on us all at Afon Tâf, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Angela’s family and friends at this difficult time. Please see the link regarding bereavemen­t if you require any support at this time.”

Former pupil Gemma Parry wrote on Twitter that she was “heartbroke­n” at the loss of her “incredible” former teacher.

Hundreds of pupils, parents and friends responded with tributes on Twitter and Afon Tâf High’s Facebook page, which posted:

“It is with great sadness and an extremely heavy heart that we must confirm the passing of a member of our staff, Angela Stanton.

“Angela has been an integral part of Afon Tâf for 27 years and has impacted on the lives of thousands of young people. Angela was a truly inspiratio­nal teacher who always found time to support and encourage the pupils in her care.

“We are absolutely devastated by this tragic news and we keep Angela’s family, friends, colleagues and pupils, past and present, in our thoughts.”

Among the hundreds of responses posted, one mother responded: “So sorry to hear such sad news, both my boys have fond memories of her lessons. Thinking of you all.”

Other pupils and former pupils wrote: “Truly one of the best. There are very few people who make an impact on you like Miss Stanton did.”

“Rip Miss Stanton, was such an amazing teacher to have.”

“she was my teacher many years ago but recently my daughter’s drama teacher; she will be devastated when I tell her xx.”

Merthyr’s Cabinet Member for Learning Cllr Lisa Mytton said: “We are saddened to hear of the passing of Angela Stanton, who was a well-respected, longservin­g member of staff at Afon Tâf School. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends”

Neither the council nor the school would confirm whether or not Angela was ill before she died.
