Thugs wreck care worker’s car
A CARER’S car has been completely destroyed after windows were smashed and a firework was set alight inside it while she was working.
Dorothy Devine, a domiciliary care worker from Whitchurch, Cardiff, was caring for one of her clients in Gabalfa when her car was torched.
The 64-year-old, who has been a carer for 20 years, said she had only been away from the vehicle for 14 minutes before she noticed it was on fire on Llandinam Crescent.
“I’m still in shock, I can’t really take it in what has happened,” said Dorothy.
“I must’ve been gone literally 14 minutes. You can see me clocking in at 7.20pm and coming out again.
“In that time somebody has smashed the window, put the firework dead centre of the drivers seat and set it off.”
Dorothy said she saw some flames from her clients house but has no idea what had happened.
“I was in the bathroom so through the frosted glass I could sort of see some lights or flames. I thought ‘that’s a funny firework’ as it wasn’t going up in the air it was just sort of burning in one place. When I finally came out and had a look I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
“A woman over the road said she had seen two boys around the car, and then speaking to the firefighters they said it looked like the window was smashed and the firework deliberately put in.”
Dorothy said she isn’t from the area and so believes it was a random attack.
“I’m not from round there so I don’t think it was aimed at me but they just had the intention to do that to somebody, anybody’s car. I just can’t believe anybody would do that.
“The lady who I was caring for is vulnerable too and it was just outside her house, it’s worrying.
“It’s been a tough year anyway before this. I had Covid back in June and have been trying to pay off my car every month so I don’t have it hanging over me and it’s just such a waste.”
A spokeswoman from South Wales Fire and Rescue service said: “At approximately 7.45pm on November 5, we received reports of a vehicle fire in Gabalfa, Cardiff.
“Crews from Whitchurch station attended the incident. The incident concluded at approximately 8.11pm and is suspected to have been deliberate.”
