Man charged after 25-year-old dies and 18-year-old critical in hospital

A MAN has been charged with drugs offences after a 25-year-old man died, police have confirmed.

Officers were called Taff Street in Tongwynlais at 12.15am on Sunday after a man collapsed at the property.

Despite the best efforts of his friends, and then emergency crews, he died a short while later.

Detectives said that a 33-year-old from Cardiff has since been charged with being concerned in the supply of cocaine, possession with intent to supply cocaine and possession of cannabis.

The incident was the second similar incident that happened in the South Wales Police force area over the weekend. On Saturday, officers were called to Llys Talybont halls of residence in Cardiff after an 18-year-old female student was found collapsed by her flatmates.

She was taken to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where she remains critically ill. The girl’s family have travelled to South Wales to be by her bedside.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “We are continuing to investigate the death of a 25-year-old man and an incident which has left an 18-year-old woman in a critical condition in hospital.

“There is nothing at this stage to suggest they are connected but detectives are keeping an open mind and investigating the possibility that the drug Ketamine might be a factor.

“Users of controlled drugs are once again reminded that they should be aware that they can never be 100% sure of exactly what they are taking.” That sentiment was also echoed by the force’s Detective Chief Inspector Tom Moore.

He said: “Two families have been left devastated by these tragic events over the weekend and they are being supported by officers as we continue with our inquiries.

“One man from Tongwynlais has died and a female student residing at Llys Talybont Halls of Residence is critically ill in hospital.”
