‘Our backs are redundant for the majority of game’ – Shane

-

SHANE Williams admits he’s struggling to see what identity Wayne Pivac is attempting to stamp on this current Wales side.

The fallout from Friday’s 32-9 loss to Ireland has continued over the last few days, with questions over the head coach starting to gather momentum.

Lions legend Sam Warburton, who recently left a coaching role under the Kiwi boss, believes this weekend’s clash with Georgia is already a ‘must-win’ game, such is the level of concern around their recent displays.

And fellow Wales great Williams believes there are still unanswered questions hanging over the camp, particularly over their failures in the breakdown and from the set-piece.

Speaking to Premier Sports, he said: “It’s fair to say that Wales aren’t playing good rugby at the moment.

“People talk about transition, but you’ve got pretty much the same squad that was involved with Gats, with a couple of changes of course.

“Pivac will want to change the way Wales play, but it’s just the execution. The breakdown is key for me.

“Wales have dominated that area in the past and bullied teams, but it seems to have flipped around.

“Wales aren’t getting on the front foot, the set-piece has been particularly poor.”

Pivac himself responded to this latest defeat – the sixth consecutive loss on his watch – by claiming the team is still adjusting under his style after a decade working under previous boss Warren Gatland.

However, Williams says Pivac’s philosophy remains a mystery, adding that the backs in particular are finding life hard under the new set-up.

“The identity and the way that Wales want to play at the moment – I haven’t got a clue what that is. Our backs are redundant for the majority of the game.

“Frustrating and disappointing are the right words at the moment.”
